Democracy. Democracy is NOT a spectator sport. We will work to: get the best candidates; see that more of our citizens participate in our democracy; and ensure that every vote counts. Our national strength is based on our democratic values.

Equality. The basic rights of all citizens need to be upheld and expanded using our constitution, laws and customs.

Opportunity. We will work to restore the USA as the country of opportunity. Supporting high quality public education provides the major engine for opportunity and protection for our democracy. We welcome new people as they bring new vibrancy to our “melting pot.”

Health. We believe healthcare is a fundamental right and thank Presidents Johnson and Obama for Medicare, Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act. Our current inequitable system of financing healthcare should be replaced by an improved Medicare program for all.

Economic Fairness and Security. We believe in a society where you tax fairly and spend wisely with fiscal efficiency, effectiveness and accountability. We support balancing the interests of employees, employers, and consumers. We support a strong broad-based middle class. We support improving Social Security and safety net programs. Trade needs to be fair.

Jobs, Economic Investment & Development The best welfare program is a safe, productive job paying a livable wage. We support investments in infrastructure, science and technology; access to capital for local economies; investments in rebuilding America’s manufacturing industries to assure America’s economic development; and programs to rebuild areas of our country that are suffering from economic distress to bring opportunity to the people in those areas.

Environmental Protection. Human and ecosystem health and economic development depend on clean air and water and soil. We applaud Maine’s leadership in reducing the growth of greenhouse gas emissions and adapting to climate change. We support the Paris Agreement for a maximum temperature rise to 2 degrees Celsius and to give financial aid to developing nations to mitigate and adapt to climate change.

National Security. We agree with former Chairman of the Joint Chief of Staff General Martin Dempsey who said at a hearing that the Islamic State cannot be defeated by military power alone and that “the only way to fix it is to change the underlying conditions — the poverty that drives people to radicalism.” We support working locally as well as with other nations using cyber tools, diplomacy, military action, development aid and financial sanctions. Programs that bring sustainable development, health care, education, and family planning will help to reduce risks from various domestic and international threats. We need to balance the privacy rights of citizens while working to identify and minimize threats from domestic or international individuals and organizations. Sensible gun safety legislation is needed to reduce violence.
