At the conclusion of his talk\, Ott will answer questions from the audience. \nEach year\, HCDC co-sponsors this event with The Ellsworth American. \nHCDC Meeting\nHCDC members are asked to meet after the Marvin Ott lecture to go over some important business. DESCRIPTION:Studies show that community canvassing works at increasing voter participation and also more wins for candidates we support. You can do community canvassing on your time schedule and you’ll see it makes a Real Difference. About 20% of eligible voters did not vote in 2024 and if we cut that in half in 2026 it will make a wave of a difference. Again\, it doesn’t take much time but is highly effective and rewarding. \nLearn how to communicate effectively and have a chance to try it out. Local leaders will demonstrate. Learning how to actively listen can be a powerful way to make a difference with disengaged voters or people of differing views. Recently\, a trained HCDC member pulled this off with a strong Trump supporter. At the end\, they hugged each other. \nTraining will be held at the HCDC office in Ellsworth. DESCRIPTION:Building Bridges Maine will hold an online discussion about the voting amendment\, Question 1\, that will be on the ballot in November. \nRepresentatives for both Yes on 1 and No on 1 campaigns will participate and there will be opportunity to ask them questions. \nThe ballot question reads: “Do you want to change Maine election laws to eliminate two days of absentee voting\, prohibit requests for absentee ballots by phone or family members\, end ongoing absentee voter status for seniors and people with disabilities\, ban prepaid postage on absentee ballot return envelopes\, limit the number of drop boxes\, require voters to show certain photo ID before voting\, and make other changes to our elections?” \nThis online discussion will be held on September 29th\, 5:30 – 6:30pm.
