What you need to know for the June 9th Primary

The statewide primaries are on June 9, 2026. Mainers will vote in either Democratic or Republican races for Maine Governor, U.S. Representative, U.S. Senate, State Representative, State Senator, Sheriff, County Commissioner, and more.

How to participate in the Maine Democratic Primary

Maine has semi-open primaries:

  • If you are a registered Democrat voter, you will vote in the Democratic Primary.
  • If you are a registered Unenrolled voter, you can choose to vote in the Democratic Primary.
  • If you are registered as a Green Independent, Libertarian or Republican, and you would like to vote in the Democratic Primary, you must change your political party or unenroll by Tuesday, May 26.

How to register or check your voter registration

  • You can check your enrollment status by contacting your town office or city hall.
  • The deadline to register to vote online is May 19. You can register online here: Maine Voter Registration
  • You can register to vote any time at your town office or city hall.
  • You can register at your polling place on Election Day.

Casting your vote

  • Absentee ballots are available to voters at least thirty (30) days prior to Election Day. Request your ballot in-person or over the phone from your town office or city hall. You can also request and track your ballot online. Maine Online Absentee Ballot Request & Tracking Service
  • Absentee ballots must be received by your town clerk by 8:00 PM on Election Day.
  • The last day to request a no-excuse absentee ballot is Thursday, June 4.
