Campaign Internship To Mobilize Youth

The Hancock County Democratic Committee is recruiting for a late summer/fall intern (or two) to help us engage and inspire youth in Hancock County to vote this November. This is a paid position. It’s an excellent opportunity to learn firsthand about campaigning and how organizing and the Democratic party works on the local and state level. In addition, there are opportunities to learn valuable job skills–some possible areas include social media, generating original content, writing, design, and website work; data management and tech skills; working with teams and on deadlines. We may ask you to organize texting/postcard-writing parties and tap into your own networks to get friends-of-friends motivated about the issues and candidates this fall.

Description:

The Campaign ’24 Intern position is a part time position designed to support Democratic candidates and causes and encourage more young people to action. It will provide experience with political campaigns, build leadership skills and experience in community action, and strengthen basic customer service and administrative support skills. Wages will be based on $18 per hour plus standard benefits. Hours will vary from 8 to 30 hours per week depending on a schedule based on campaign needs and worked out in conjunction with a supervisor.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide basic customer service and voter information on behalf of HCDC.
  • Promote political engagement, voter registration and voting among young citizens.
  • Recruit, engage and build community among all Democratic voters.
  • Promote and support early and election day voting.

Duties:

  • Support democratic candidates.
  • Advise the HCDC executive committee on strategies for young voter engagement.
  • Initiate and coordinate voter registration and campaign information events for young voters.
  • Develop and initiate communication strategies targeting young voters via social media platforms and contribute to HCDC monthly newsletters.
  • Initiate and coordinate periodic social events for new HCDC members.
  • Contribute content to monthly HCDC meeting agenda.
  • Present candidate, voting and HCDC information at public forum and events. 
  • Staff HCDC Office: Greet visitors, answer phones; provide candidate information, assist with distributing campaign signs and literature.
  • Participate in training, including provide training for voter canvassing, canvasser safety, voter engagement as available.
  • Meet with HCDC donors to report on progress.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Familiar with social media messaging
  • Comfort with public speaking
  • Experience working with diverse populations (age, gender, race, ethnicity, geographic, partisan differences)
  • Interest and curiosity in civics, government function, and politics
  • Experience working on campaigns a plus
  • Self-directed, ability to work independently and as a team member
  • Good time management skills and ability to work under pressure
  • Able or willing to learn to deal with people under stress; 
  • Flexible availability, some evenings and weekends required.
