On Saturday, February 28, Democrats in Hancock County gathered to caucus as part of a state-wide Democratic Caucus event. Here in Hancock County our caucus was held at the Universalist Unitarian Church in Ellsworth, which was filled with great energy and a capacity crowd of concerned, enthusiastic, and determined residents from every corner of Hancock County.
Hancock County will send 69 delegates and 14 alternates representing towns across the county to the Maine State Convention in Portland on May 1st and 2nd.
A key message of the morning focused on the state of our country and the role each of us can play in shaping its future. Participants were encouraged to join and help lead their town committees; help at their local polling stations to ensure secure elections; volunteer with the Hancock County Democratic Committee; and even run for office.
Newly-elected Ellsworth City Council member Marinna Smith spent a few moments sharing her experience of running for office. “My decision to run was to stand up for my town and democracy in these times. It was a snap decision at the kitchen table: why can’t I run?” Marinna provides a perfect example of the fact that any of us with a desire to be part of the solution can run for office.
As of today, Hancock County is actively seeking candidates to represent us in the Maine State Legislature in the following districts:
- HD 13: Ellsworth, Waltham, Fletcher’s Landing
- HD 17: Bucksport, Orland, Penobscot, Verona
- HD 18: Dedham, Otis, Mariaville.
If you or anyone you know is a resident in these districts and might be interested in becoming a representative and helping to hold our majority in Augusta, please reach out to chair@hancockdems.org and she’ll put you in touch with Phil Bailey, our Candidate Recruitment lead. There is still time to declare and get the required signatures by the March 16th deadline!
Thank you to everyone who attended on Saturday. Let’s continue working together to bring a great big Blue Wave in November!
