Maine Senate Race Update

Over the last several long days, the Maine Democratic Party has been working not only with Democratic State Committee reps but with county chairs and vice chairs up and down the state to come up with a plan to name a new candidate for Senate by July 27th. The goal has been to develop a process that is as transparent and inclusive as possible while working within this impossibly tight timeline and strict legal requirements. The MDP has given county committees an important role in this process.

Here is what Hancock County Dems are looking at right now:

1.

We will be holding a County Meeting on the weekend of July 18-19 (most likely dates). This meeting is open to anyone who was a registered Democrat in Hancock County as of June 9, 2026. Stay tuned for location and times. At this meeting, participants will select delegates to represent us at the statewide Nominating Convention the following weekend.

Counties in Maine are allocated a third of the delegates that represented us this spring at the May State Convention. Right now for Hancock County that means 23 delegates and 5 alternates.

If you are interested in running as a delegate or participating in next weekend’s county meeting, be sure to pre-register–

2.

The following weekend, the state will hold an in-person Nominating Convention Saturday, July 25 at 9AM at the Cross Insurance Center, Bangor. Our delegates will join others across the state to vote on the next Democratic Candidate for Senate. Voting will be by rounds (basically like ranked-choice).

3.

For our regularly scheduled general meeting this Thursday, July 16, we will dedicate some time to discussing this process and answer questions you may have. This meeting is at the Unitarian Universalist Church in Ellsworth, 121 Bucksport Rd., beginning at 7pm, with Zoom option (though you must pre-register). No voting will happen at this meeting. See our website for details.

We’ll look forward to your participation in the coming weeks.
