To the Editor:
Imagine the following scenario:
A doctor encourages bad actors to spread disease which harms thousands. Then, in order to keep her lucrative job and increase her income, she cures hundreds of those she herself has infected and trumpets her success.
This is what Susan Collins is doing. The bad actors are the Trump administration and Republican legislators (like Collins) who have supported policies like the Iran war and the safety net cuts in the so-called “Big Beautiful Bill” that have increased the cost of living to Mainers by increasing fuel prices, the price of the many essentials that depend on them and the cost and availability of medical care.
While it is undeniable that Susan Collins’ seniority has helped her bring money to Maine, the economic damage to average Mainers inflicted by Republican policies supported by Collins far outweighs the benefits of the dollars she brings to the state.
To change these damaging policies ASAP Democrats, must win control of Congress this November. Defeating Collins is crucial to accomplishing this. Not only will her defeat increase the quality of life for the average Mainer, it will allow Congress to curtail this administration’s blatant corruption, ill-considered foreign policy decisions, unnecessarily cruel immigration policy and authoritarian impulses.
